Taiwan Da Hong Pao

This tea was a very special find. It was grown by a Dong Ding farmer who was apparently gifted seven cuttings from the Da Hong Pao mother bushes about 15 years ago. Over the course of those 15 years he has cloned those cuttings on his own land in Dong Ding to be able to produce a Da Hong Pao oolong. But he processes his tea like a Dong Ding, because that's how he makes tea. So this tea was ball-rolled, and then it was charcoal roasted.

The result is like if Da Hong Pao and Dong Ding had a baby. It is dark roasted, rich and warming with a prominent mineral note. But there is also a definite Taiwanese character to its fruitiness. The tea was heavily roasted, so if you like heavy roasted oolong it will make you happy. It is also a great candidate for aging, maybe 6 months to a year, so the roast can have time to settle down and integrate into the tea. We are enjoying the broth for its balance and rich flavor.

Highly recommended for lovers of rich, dark and roasty oolong.
