GABA OolongFloating Leaves Tea
GABA oolong is a specially processed tea which is flushed with nitrogen during the what is traditionally an 'oxidization' process. This creates GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) in the tea leaves, the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in our central nervous system. GABA oolong is said to calm the nerves and potentially has a whole host of medical benefits, which you can read about on Wikipedia.
Although we don't choose teas for their "health benefits", we have been approached many times over the years about GABA oolong. It is now one of Taiwan's most popular modern teas. But before this crop, we have never been able to find one that meets our standards in terms of taste.
This particular GABA is much closer to Hongshui oolong than other GABA we've tried, meaning it is allowed to oxidize for longer. The taste is appley-sweet with a prominent cinnamon note, and there's a hint of a lactobacillus note. The broth is rich and brews to a deep orange-red color.
