2018 Winter Baozhong Farmer's Choice


Baozhong is a modern open leaf oolong, naturally fragrant without any scenting. Historically Baozhong was a scented tea until two Taiwanese farmers in Nangang found a way to produce an floral fragrance with innovative processing techniques. It is now one of the most popular oolong teas in Taiwan, although it is relatively unknown here in the States.

This Baozhong is made by our longtime farmer friend Mr Chen in Pinglin. We have been working with him for over 13 years. He was born to rice farmers, and switched to tea. He is one of the hardest working and upbeat farmers we know. He has an experimental attitude about tea farming, and does every step of the processing in house, instead of outsourcing as is common practice now.

Farmer Chen processes this tea to give it a heavier body and more fruit notes. It is not made to win competitions; that would require extremely light processing, floral notes and a jade colored broth like the Competition Style Baozhong


The Winter harvest has a very balanced, rich broth. Notes of buttery cooked vegetables come though in the wet leaves. The fruity aftertaste lingers in the mouth and the back of the throat, and there's a pleasant cooling sensation. There's even a warming throat sensation upon swallowing. This season's tea is bold and balanced.
