Competition Style Baozhong 2023 Spring
Baozhong is a brightly fragrant, open leaf oolong tea. The leaves are long, spindly and deep forest green. It's actually the greenest of oolong teas produced in Taiwan, beloved for it's floral fragrance. I always feel that good Baozhong has a note like fresh snappy beans from the garden.
We call this one Competition Style because it is made to win tea competitions. Clear, unified floral scent and smooth body with a jade colored broth are hallmarks of competition winning tea.
We almost lost our chance at getting a 'competition style' Baozhong this year because Sunny got to the farm just after they had sent the competition style Baozhong to the competition. There was good luck and bad luck. The good was that it won, and the Chen family really needed this after a couple of challenging years! But the bad was that we weren't able to afford it any more. So we quickly went on a search for a good Baozhong that meets the same requirements.
We were lucky to find this new farmer through a friend after trying many many teas, and to our taste this is actually an improvement over the lost Competition Style.
It's more rich and MORE FRAGRANT, with a super creamy broth and bright, punchy aroma. This farmer is very skilled in the art of Baozhong making.
Super crisp and refreshing. I reach for a tea like this on muggy, hot days and it helps to 'open up my face'.
